BOBBY REA MEMORIAL CROSS COUNTRY RACE 27th OCTOBER 2007
The Bobby Rea Memorial Cross Country Races were held after the Juvenile Championships at the University of Ulster. The senior athletes who had not travelled to this weekends Frankfurt Marathon performed well on the fast, well-organised course:
Comber Vets Cross Country Saturday 20 October 2007
A new slightly flatter course at the Billy Neill playing fields on Saturday 20 October 2007 saw the start of the cross country season. This was race was also the trials for selection to the Northern Ireland teams to compete in the British & Irish Masters XC championships to be held at Stormont on Saturday 17 November 2007. Spikes or trainers was the question of the day as the course was dry and firm after our recent spell of good dry weather. MORE PHOTOS
Both the ladies open and male vets over 65 had to race 5K. An excellent race, which saw Suzanne McCormick pipped by Anne Paul for 1st place by one second. Rona Harkens, in only her second race in almost a year after a long spell out through injury, had a good race, finishing 2nd in her age category. The male vets 65+ saw a runaway victory for Gary Nicholl, who lead from gun to tape
Ards 5 Miler : August 2007
6 club members turned up for this race but only 4 took part. Hazel and Sam had not noticed that the start had been chaged to 7.00pm and arrived 10 minutes after theoff. This quite tough little 5 miler is growing in numbers each year, with around 120+ taking part on Friday night. The race had everything, a flat start towards Greyabbey for one and a half miles, then a climb of three quarters of a mile. At the top of the hill it turns back to Ards and is undulating for about 2 miles. The last three quarters of a mile is a fast downhill back to the finish at Londonderry Park. The photos which were taken after the race, show Bobby leading us in a chorus of Happy Birthday for Julie and a guest with us over from Bideford, the home town of John's father.
PORTAFERRY 10 MILE
13 club members were among the 280 runners who took part in the Portaferry 10 mile road race and 2 x 5 mile relay. The forecast had been for heavy showers but thankfully they got it wrong and it was a fine dry and sunny evening for this very undulating course. 12 ran the full 10 mile and Kate did the relay. Her partner, Ossie, had to pull out at the last minute so hubby Eric ran the first leg and continued on to finish the full race. Three club runners picked up category prizes. After a good spread of tea and sarnies, it was onto the last ferry to Strangford and home.

Lisburn Half Marathon & 10kThe Monday Mob turned out in force at Lisburn with six in the half-marathon and six in the 10k. Although, a dry and mild evening, the strong winds put paid to fast times, but it did not stop a few picking up age category prizes. The club also had 10 people marshalling at the 11 mile mark in the half-marathon. It was good to hear familiar voices cheering and encouraging us at that stage as the old legs were starting to tire a bit. This was the 25th anniversary of the event and a special mention goes to Dessie Brownlee who has competed in every single one.

Wednesday 23 May 2007 - Banbridge 10K The club vets turned out in force for this hilly (and I mean hilly) 10K road race. Three ladies and six men, with the ladies coming out tops after all three picked up prizes. A good field of 188 took part considering the Maghera 10K was the previous night. Les Jones 10k Friday 18th May.152 runners turned out for this popular 10k race. The club had 8 members taking part. A slight change to the normal course saw the runners do only 2 laps of the Mary Peters Track at the start and finished with one and a quarter laps. In between was a mix of road, lagan towpath, Dub playing fields and the dreaded hill in Barnets. "I could swear that hill gets steeper each year". Unfortunately, for some of the front runners they veered off course due to no marshalls at one of the turn off points. Although not a course for PBs, everyone ran well. BATH HALF-MARATHON -25 March 2007
Seven members of Lagan Valley and three guests from East Antrim Harriers flew to Bristol at the weekend for the Bath Half Marathon. The course was two laps around the picturesque old city. Conditions could not have been better, with cloud cover, mild temperatures and a light wind. A two start system saw the 8,000 runners through the start in about ten minutes. Having been text the times from the Larne half marathon the day before, a few people felt under pressure to run well. It certainluy worked, because Susan and Hazel picked up PBs with Eric, Andy, Gary and Carole running close to PBs. Unfortunately, although seven members travelled, only six ran the race. Kate, who is getting back after breaking her ankle, had to spectate and did a good run cheering us on and taking photos around the course. That evening after the race, we all headed for the Thermal Spa Baths in the city centre. With heated outdoor and indoor swimming pools, whirlpools and steam rooms, they helped relieve the aches and pains of the day's race. Smooth flights, good food, good race times and excellent socialising added up to a great weekendfor everyone.

JIMMY'S 10k: Sunday March 18th 2007
Snow, gales and sunshine greeted the runners in Downpatrick for Jimmy's 10K. The course reverted back to that of two years ago. One part that never changes is the climb from the main street up and around St Patrick's Cathedral. Nine club runners took part in the 10k and eight in the relay event. The first 5k out of town along the roads, saw the wind sometimes at your back but mainly head on. 5k to 7k was nicely sheltered along by the riverside in among the trees. From 7k to the finish it was head's down and dig in right to the line. Everyone was happy enough with their times considering the conditions and a few who were feeling a bit delicate from the club dinner in Belfast the previous evening (see photos). Gary Nicholl picked up 1st vet 65 and Fred Hammond 2nd vet 55. Well done both.
Gary(on the left) and Fred-happy with their days work....The relays at Jimmy’s 10k have an interesting format. It is a 2 person team running 5km each. On the first leg, Eric Montgomery, Adam Ingram, Robbie Rankin and Lee Sharkey set the scene over the first 5Km, and handed over to Kate Montgomery , Philip Treacy, Michael Robinson and Frank Sharkey respectively.
2nd relay team overall went to ‘son and father’ duo Lee and Frank Sharkey just squeezing out their teammates.

For some of the juniors, this was their longest race ever…..but all had a great day, with fantastic hospitality….(That means food, beverages, banter and prizes….well organised by the host club…East Down AC)LV Juniors who took part in the relay at Jimmy's 10k from left-Philip Treacy,Robbie Rankin,Adam Ingram,Frank Sharkey(wishing he was still a junior) and Lee Sharkey.
